Choral Music from Estonia
The wealth of choral singing and contemporary composition for choirs in Estonia is arguably unrivalled in Europe. In 2003 the UNESCO international jury included the Estonian tradition of song and dance festivals in the list of oral and intellectual heritage of humankind, enshrining it as one of the great global cultural events. This strong singing tradition has been mirrored by a hugely impressive list of composers who have contributed strongly to the national repertoire through settings of traditional song.
The programme chosen for the EPCC’s performance in the beautifully renovated Augustinian Church in Galway will allow an Irish audience the exciting opportunity to experience this very special culture of choral singing, and will feature pieces by Arvo Pärt and other contemporary Estonian composers.
