Saint Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Dublin
St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral is situated on Dublin’s North side in Malborough Street. The church which serves as the Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin was constituted in 1825 from Saint Mary’s Chapel Liffey Street, whose pre-Reformation monastic antecedent was the Cistercian Abbey of Saint Mary’s founded in the twelfth century. The present church is built on a site that was part of the ancient monastic foundation. The church was dedicated on 14th November 1825, the Feast of Saint Laurence O’Toole, Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of Dublin under the patronage of the “Conception of the Virgin”
Saint Mary’s Pro-Cathedral is one of the four mensal parishes of the Archbishop of Dublin, which means that Archbishop Diarmuid Martin is currently the Parish Priest. Since its foundation Saint Mary’s has hosted many historic Church and State occasions as the mother church of the Archdiocese of Dublin, affectionately known as the “Pro”.
As the parish church of the people of the Pro-Cathedral parish, Saint Mary’s continues to be primarily a place of worship where God’s pilgrim people are nourished daily in the celebration of the Eucharist. The church is open throughout the day for the celebration of Mass and for both public and private prayer and devotions.
It is the hope of the Parish team that in your visit to Saint Mary’s you will find a peaceful oasis of prayer at the heart of a sometimes hectic city. Join with us in our Eucharistic worship and communal prayer or spend some time in silent prayer. Please respect the sacredness of this place, made holy by the presence of the Lord and the prayer and devotion of generations of worshippers.
The Pro-Cathedral serves not only those who live in the parish, but also the staff members of business houses, thousands of office workers and public servants who work in the centre-city by day The Priests and staff of the Pro-Cathedral are at your service.
